Wonderful Pistachios
Dubbed the “skinny nut,” pistachios yield the most nuts per serving: 49 pistachios in a 1-oz serving compared to 23 almonds. Because they have protein and fiber, pistachios help promote satiety—so you are likely to eat less, but feel fuller longer. Additionally, it is one of the only in-shell snack nuts that take longer to eat.

Most of the fat in pistachios is “good” unsaturated fat that can help lower the risk of heart disease. In a new study published in the September 2008 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found that eating one to two handfuls of pistachios a day resulted in a 9 to 12% reduction in LDL “bad” cholesterol levels.

In addition, pistachios have a greater antioxidant capacity than green tea and are the only nut to contain significant amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that have been associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in Americans over 65.

The Wonderful Pistachios brand is grown in the heartland of California. They are available in 10-oz ($3.99), 16-oz ($6.99), 24-oz ($9.99), and 32-oz ($13.99)bags. .

Pros: Antioxidants and good fats.

Cons: Still a high fat food (13g per 1-oz serving). Use portion control.

Comments: Since I found a good supply of pistachios at my local food mart where they have the unshelled products I have added this to my diet. A handful is all that is needed to curb the hungries.

Comments: We love these pistachios. Packaged well. And shelling them does slow down eating. This is our favorite snack while playing cards.

Comments: Linda, we buy ten or more bags a week, but we are unhappy with the 122 empty shells per 64 oz bag.

Comments: Pistachios are a great snack. They are full of healthy fats and protein that keep you feeling full. The shells slow down your eating and make it seem like you are getting more than the handful of other nuts. A palm full is enough.
